LUDLOW Castle Motor Club's Andrew Sankey enjoyed a memorable day when Newtown & District AC organised the Rally Marketing Mid Wales Stages.

Almost 100 crews competed in the Welsh forests of Hafren, Tarenig, and Myherin, with further tests through the Sweet Lamb complex. Although the day was marred by very heavy intermittent rain showers, this did not stop Sankey from crossing the finish line in first place, more than one minute ahead of his nearest challenger for the top position.

Sankey was co-driving for the Icelandic National Rally Champion, Daniel Sigurdasson, in a Mitsu-bishi EVO 9 which ran without problem all day.

Apart from the odd encounter with the forest banks, Sankey and Sigurdasson led the event from start to finish, giving LCMC yet another winner after Chris Ridge's win on the Rally of the Midlands.

Fellow LCMC members also produced good results with Dave Brick and Rob Woodhouse bringing their Subaru Impreza home in 4th place overall after a fairly trouble-free day.

The father-and-son team of Richard and Robert Gough blew the cobwebs off their MK2 Escort and crossed the finish line in 13th place overall.

Chris Ridge co-drove for Jason Pritchard in the 205 Challenge section of the event and finished 31st overall.

This was in spite of a split hose causing loss of water which was replaced frantically from a stream at the start of the first special stage of the day. The hose was replaced at the first opportunity.

Also competing in the 205 Challenge was Jon Scott, winning co-driver of the Clubman's section of the recent Severn Valley Stages. Scott, co-driving for Jamie Anderson, finished 44th overall.
