CHURCH Stretton Cricket Club is planning a host of special events to mark its centenary season in 2021 – and has appointed a new first team captain to lead them into their second century.

The club, which will continue to compete in the Shropshire County Cricket League during 2021, has named Ed Groom as its new captain.

The appointment was made during the club’s recent AGM, during which plans for their centenary celebrations were put in place.

One of the big plans the club has in place is the launch of a book, to be called “100 Not Out” which will mark the milestone.

It will include pictures and memories from players who have represented the club over a number of years.

Groom, who stood in as temporary first team captain during the brief 2020 campaign, which was shortened due to the coronavirus pandemic, said he was excited to take on the role.

“It is an honour to be entrusted with the role of first team captain at Church Stretton Cricket Club and I’m excited for the challenge,” he said.

“I have some ideas of where I’d like to take the club and to be able to start this journey during our centenary year is fantastic.

“I’m already looking forward to the season getting underway and I’m hopeful we can have a successful season.”

Former skipper Peter Lee will continue to play for the club and Rob Whittall, chairman of Church Stretton Cricket Club, paid tribute to the outgoing captain.

Whittall said: “As a club, we are excited to be planning for our centenary year during 2021.

“As part of this, we want to encourage as many young players to get involved with the club and take on roles of responsibility.

“We were delighted that Ed put himself forward to take on the first team captain role and try to take the club on this journey.

“During what is sure to be a landmark season for the club, this is an exciting appointment and we hope it is the start of a younger future for us.

“I’d like to take the opportunity to thank Pete for all his hard work during his time as captain – which has also included preparing the pitch every week and selection responsibilities – and am delighted that he has committed to continue playing for the club during the upcoming season.”
