CLEE Hill RFC are heading into the unknown in Saturday’s Midlands Junior Vase final at Leicester-based Birstall, admits captain Charlie Evans – but he wouldn’t have it any other way.

The two sides – each top of their respective Midlands Four divisions, with only two losses apiece all season – meet at Birstall in the regional showpiece.

The winners will be crowned Midlands champions and move on to the national semi-finals, just one further victory away from a Twickenham final.

Evans said: “The message is that it’s not our biggest game of the season, it’s just our next game. Every week we keep winning, it builds confidence.

“We haven’t gone into too much detail on Birstall because we’ve worried about teams before then hammered them – and haven’t worried beforehand about teams who have taken us close.

“It’s all about how we play on the day – we know if we turn up and play how we can, we can beat any side at this level.

“But we are expecting a battle because they have to be just as good a side as we are to have got this far.”

Hill go into the final on the back of a 55-5 hammering of Rugeley that virtually ensured Evans’ table-toppers will go up from Midlands Four West North.

The victory – Hill’s tenth successive league triumph – left them needing one win from their remaining five games to seal promotion.

They trailed 5-0 after 25 minutes but Bryn Rees, Dennis Prescott and Evans bagged braces, while Robbie Jordan, Steve Adams and Archie Groves also crossed as Hayden Edwards hit five conversions.
