CLEE Hill RFC could be set for a magical March – but skipper Charlie Evans is keen to stress the Midlands Four West North leaders have won nothing just yet.

Saturday’s 27-0 whitewash win over promotion rivals Barton-under-Needwood opened up a 16-point cushion to third place for table-topping Clee with just six games remaining.

They also have a game in hand on their two nearest challengers and could theoretically clinch promotion with wins in their next two matches.

Those games – away at Rugeley this Saturday and struggling Birmingham Exiles on March 21 – come either side of March 14’s Midlands Junior Vase final at Birstall in what is a massive fortnight.

“It’s looking reasonably hopeful for promotion,” Evans admitted, “but we are not getting too far ahead of ourselves. Every game is still important and Rugeley is another big one this week.

“They are always a tough outfit to play away and we also still have (second-placed) Aldridge to come.

“There’s a real buzz around the club and people are obviously excited but there hasn’t been a lot of chat about promotion or even the cup final, the players are just enjoying their rugby on the day.”

Evans was among the try scorers in the shutout success against a fourth-placed Barton side that had won six of their previous seven games.

A Hayden Edwards penalty put Hill on their way and he converted tries by Luke Bowen and Dennis Prescott, with Archie Groves also crossing the line.

“They were probably the in-form team in the league,” said Evans. “We were saying beforehand it was probably our biggest game because they were going so well.

“The clean sheet means as much to us as the win – I think it’s down to an average of 7.5 points a game against us now.”
