LUDLOW Hockey Club’s men’s and ladies’ teams put poor starts to the season behind them to pick up their first points of the campaign last weekend.

The men’s first XI, promotion contenders last term, had suffered heavy defeats in their opening two games but got back on track with a 3-1 derby win over Shrewsbury in West Midlands Division One.

Similarly, the ladies’ firsts had lost their three opening fixtures in the Shropshire League but ground out a 0-0 draw at Montgomery to get off the mark for the season. Pip Braden was their star turn.

Ludlow men’s seconds, however, came undone, losing 2-1 in a tight encounter at Cannock thirds.

In the Worcestershire Women’s League, Tenbury Ladies’ firsts saw their Division One game with Bromsgrove postponed.

In Division Three, Tenbury Ladies’ seconds impressed in defeat as they lost 2-0 at home to a strong Bromsgrove side who are now top of the table.

Both goals came in the first half but excellent defending led by Tina Bickley kept Bromsgrove at bay after the break. Player of the match went to 13-year-old Jane Hillhouse.
