BROMFIELD made light of a 73-shot handicap to beat Mortimer in the final of the Flowfit Ludlow and District Bowls League Handicap Knockout Cup and lift the trophy for the first time.

The final, held at Ludlow Castle Bowling Club, was a repeat of last year’s semi-final with Mortimer enjoying a 73-shot advantage based on this season’s results between the two teams.

Bromfield reached the final after defeating Temesters and Chelmarsh while Mortimer got past Corve, Burway and Linney to make the showpiece occasion.

Bromfield knew they needed a good start and big wins from Camilla Parsonage, Kevin Richards, Liam Dovey and Steve Dovey meant they were only 10 shots behind after four games.

Mortimer’s only victory of the night came in game number five as Lauren Burnside defeated Cheryl Lloyd 21-14 to put them back in with a shout.

Comfortable wins for Steve Burmingham and Tony Partridge swung the advantage back Bromfield’s way although Lesley Burnside kept it close for Mortimer with a narrow 21-19 loss to Barry Rogers.

Bromfield knew that winning the last two games would seal the trophy and both Anthony Rogers and Adam Dovey won comfortably to seal a 34-shot victory by 203 shots to 169.

A league spokesperson said: “The committee would like to thank Ludlow Castle for hosting the final.

“Thanks also to all supporters who came to watch the final and to all who have taken part in the league throughout the season.”
