MIKE Groves came out on top in a high-quality President’s Day competition at Ludlow Golf Club.

Groves received the President’s Prize and the Ismay Cup from club president Pat Merrick after posting an unassailable score of 41 points.

He led the way from Simon Herdsfield, whose 39 points took second prize, by virtue of a better back nine, from Peter Monk in third.

The best gross score was returned by George Watton, with 38 points, with Neill Smith (36) second.

The best of the seniors was Tony Watton, with 38 points, which included a stunning back nine of 24 points. His closest challenger was Peter Clements on 36.

The Lady Captain, Lin Thompson, found her way to the top of the leaderboard again, with her 34 points just pipping Pat Bown, in second, by a single point.

The best score by a junior was 32, returned by Harry Watts, with Harvey Barker’s 29 placing him second, but as a home player he was the winner of the Croxton Cup, for best Ludlow Junior.

Former greenkeeper Gary Mowen won the guests’ prize with 39 points, two ahead of Paul Halpin in second.
