A SUPERB final round saw Ludlow Golf Club’s Ross Magill crowned king of the region’s best amateurs as he won the Midland Closed Amateur Championship at Enville.

An opening-round 75 put Magill in 10th place, trailing leader and former Ludlow member Stephen Lane by four shots after the latter shot a level-par 71.

But Magill bagged five birdies in his three-under-par second-round 68 to win the title by three shots – and go top of the Midland Order of Merit in the process – as Lane faltered with a 75.

Closer to home, the club’s May Medal Division One spoils went to Andy Greenhalgh, who shot a nett 74, one ahead of Gareth Davies, Mike Corfield and Will Norton, who tied for second place.

Division Two was won by Graham Jones, his nett 71 three shots ahead of Alan Udall and Mike Groves, while Division Three winner John Holliday’s nett 69 was the best score of the day.

And it was a case of déjà vu in the Seniors 1, 2, 3 competition as the trio of John Phillips, Eddie Rowland and John Adams retained their title with the same score, 73 Stableford points, as last year.
