MIKE Groves booked his place in the Ludlow GC quartet for the Shropshire and Herefordshire Chronicle Cup competition for golfers with handicaps between 10 and 28.

Groves chalked up one of the day’s best scores of 38 points in the May Stableford competition to take the honours in Division Two, two points clear of Matthew Lucas-Garner, George Barker, Richard Cox and Stephen Cox who shared second place.

The Division One honours went to Will Evans whose return to form also saw him reduce his handicap. There was another four-way tie for second between Andy Dixon, Nigel Griffiths, Dave Lucas-Garner and Andy Ferriday, all returning 35 points.

Jason Burton was Division Three’s winner thanks to his 38 points and was another to book his place in the cup competition. He was two points ahead of Mike Oliver and Bryan Jones.

In Division Four Jeff Jones came out on top with his 34 points total, three ahead of second-placed Ethan Greenhalgh.

Groves and Burton will be joined by Barker and Oliver in the four-man team to represent Ludlow at The Shropshire Golf Club on Saturday August 24.

Also out on the course, Ludlow Rugby Club held its annual charity golf day and it proved a successful outing for long-time supporter Alan ‘Mash’ Hossbach, playing alongside Walsall’s Alan Pinnegar and Shane Hickman. Their team amassed a total of 82 points in the best ‘two from

three’ format.

The club’s seniors raised an excellent £1,400 which has been shared between two charities.

Last year’s seniors captain John Smithson handed over cheques for £700 to Emily Jones of Hope House and Julie Gray from Marie Curie during a presentation at the golf club. The money was raised at golf competitions and from various raffles prompting Smithson to praise the efforts of the seniors in raising such a significant amount during his year.

The next open event of the season at Ludlow Golf Club is the men’s 27-hole fourball/foursome competition on Saturday June 15.
