A VISITING team from Birmingham claimed the glory in Ludlow Golf Club’s recent Open Texas Scramble competition – as the hosts had to settle for third place.

Following a week of great weather, rain dampened the conditions, but not spirits, for the scramble as the course easily stood up to the downpours, allowing 33 teams to take part in the competition.

Emerging victorious were the Birmingham quartet of Emrys Karemo, Wayne Furber, David Stocking and Jason Harris (pictured with Ludlow gentleman’s captain Alan Reid), who returned a nett 51.75.

Taking second spot, with their nett score of 52.95, were Martin Bosco, Colin Hobson, Keith Bird and Anthony Wilkes.

Ludlow gent captain Reid led his team of Jonathan Price, Dave Fish and Will Evans to third place, with a nett 54.45.

In other events at the club, an excellent turnout of 140 golfers took part in the Seniors Open Am-Am in a best-two-from-four Stableford format.

Taking first place were Patshull Park’s John Homer, Malcolm Lewis, Mel Ellam and Malcolm Read with a score of 88 points. The winning quartet are pictured with Ludlow seniors captain John Smithson.

Tied with them, but losing out with one fewer point on the back nine, were the second-placed Ludlow foursome of Dave Simpson, John Cooke, Phil Morris and Mark Littlejohns.

Close behind, on 87 points, were another Ludlow quartet – John Smallman, Mark Rogers, Nigel Griffiths and John Newsome.

In the autumn round of the club’s Ladies’ Foursomes Cup, meanwhile, there was victory for Margaret Gosling and Judy Plant, who scored a magnificent nett 70.5.

The competition is played for in spring as a Stableford and in medal format in the autumn, with all players drawn for partners thus matching high handicaps with lower.

Finishing in second place for the autumn event were Rosie Cox and Margaret Leake who shot a nett 75.

Ludlow GC’s other recent contest was the Ladies’ Past Captain’s Rose Bowl, a competition which any previous female captains, including past members, are invited to take part.

This year’s nine-hole competition was won by Josephine Brooks, scoring 20 points, and the runner-up was Margaret Harris.
