WELLINGTON came back from a goal down to beat Shropshire rivals Shawbury United 5-1.

Gary Stevens men are now unbeaten in eight games in all competitions ahead of their FA Vase trip to Romulus on Saturday thanks to a brace each from Saul Thomas and Adam Newbury.

However, the game looked to be heading to a different outcome early on as United applied pressure and Connor Stevenson skimmed the top of the bar with a header.

The visitors eventually took a 13th minute lead when Jack Hickman headed down to Ben Salter to put his side ahead from close range.

United could have been further in front three minutes later but Mark Stallard saw his header tipped wide by an excellent Matt Apperley save.

However, the tie turned on the 22nd minute when Welly equalised through a long ball which Thomas beat goalkeeper Tom Delamere to before rounding the goalkeeper and sliding the ball home.

United felt unfairly done by when referee Tom Palmer pointed to the penalty spot on the 37th minute after Jack Hickman was judged to have fouled Glen Seagust inside the box and Welly’s skipper Newbury slotted home from the penalty spot.

Stevens’ side were out of sight five minutes after the break with a third goal when Newbury’s free-kick was nodded home by defender Jack Lewis.

Any faint Shawbury hope was ended on the hour when Stallard was shown a straight red card for foul language used towards the referee.

A minute later Thomas scored the goal of the evening beating his man before firing his side 4-1 ahead.

Wellington smelt further goals and substitute Matt James got to the byline before crossing to Nick Britton who headed just wide.

Newbury had the last say finishing smartly inside the box in the final minute of the match.

Tuesday’s result followed a 2-2 draw with Wednesfield on Saturday when Lewis and Thomas were again on the scoresheet.

Meanwhile Pegasus Juniors slipped to a fourth straight league defeat at Dudley Sports losing 2-1 with Aaron Finch scoring the only goal for the visitors.

Lads Club rested five players for their league tie against promotion chasing Haughmond resulting in a 5-0 defeat.
