SIX players flew the flag for Ludlow Hockey Club at the Midlands qualifying round of the England Hockey National Indoor Championships – the first time the club had entered the competition.

Just four players were available for the opening game against Khalsa due to the tricky travelling conditions and they found themselves 4-0 down inside five minutes.

Things improved when the remaining players got on to the pitch and the game finished 9-3 to Khalsa.

Ludlow fared better in the second game against Coalville, a team of similar standard to Ludlow, and ran out comfortable 4-1 winners.

The final game against Belper was always going to be hard and, as fatigue set in, Ludlow began to suffer and ended up losing 9-2.

Ludlow’s squad on the day was Gavin Hughes, Dave Hughes, Andy Richards, Jake Watts, Sam Pratt and Matt Blount.
