GOALS from brothers Alex and Declan Bright helped Tenbury Town to their first win of the season in the Premier Division of the Herefordshire League – a 2-1 victory over Pegasus Reserves.

But it was a game that was in danger of not taking place after the referee failed to turn up for the match at Brimfield.

Tenbury boss Darren Worthington admitted the fixture was in doubt until one of the Pegasus backroom team came to the rescue.

“It was clear that nobody was going to turn up so we had a discussion with the opposition,” he explained. “We didn’t have anyone suitably qualified so to make sure we could get the game on, one of their coaches, Steve Wynn, stepped in. He did very well, the game was played in a good spirit and I think he quite enjoyed himself!”

Tenbury started the better and opened the scoring midway through the first half when a Dean Morris free-kick picked out Alex Bright who converted into the roof of the net.

The visitors levelled just before half-time when a free-kick was parried by keeper George Hart only for the rebound to be turned over the line.

The second half saw Town put the visitors’ defence under pressure with the impressive Dec Bright constantly getting the better of the Pegasus right back as Tenbury created a number of chances.

The home side finally regained the lead on the hour when Adam Everall chased down a nothing ball in which he collided with the advancing keeper only to see the ball ricochet into the feet of Dec Bright who coolly finished in spite of being closed down by two covering defenders.

The Hereford visitors pressed for an equaliser and it needed an excellent point blank save from Hart to deny them late on.

“We worked hard and we’re delighted to get our first win,” Worthington added. “We knew it was going to be tough playing in the higher league but after losing our first two games we got off the mark last week and have built on that with the win on Saturday.

“This is a much higher standard of football with teams protecting the ball far more. We were competitive in our opening two games but we’ve learnt from our mistakes and have continued to improve.

“Our main priority this season was to stay clear of relegation so we will see where we are the the halfway stage.”

Town were due to travel to Littleton in the Smedley Crooke Cup last night [WED] before welcoming Ewyas Harold to Brimfield on Saturday.

Fellow Premier Division outfit Tenbury United were without a game at the weekend but return to action on Saturday when they host Wellington Rangers.

The Palmers Meadow side have only played one game in the league so far – a 6-2 win at Leominster Town.
