TWO air ambulances landed near to Stourport Marina after a gas canister exploded on a boat.

Emergency services were called to reports of a gas explosion near to Sandy Lane Industrial Estate in Stourport just before 7pm on Monday, August 3.

Two ambulances, two air ambulances, the Midlands Air Ambulance critical care car,  a paramedic officer and fire crews from Droitwich and Worcester rushed to the scene.

A man and a woman, who were on the boat at the time of the explosion, suffered burns and were taken to the Regional Burns Centre.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 6.40pm to a boat near Sandy Lane Industrial Estate in Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire, to reports of a gas canister which had exploded.

"Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford and Strensham attended the scene.

"On arrival, crews found the man and woman who had been on board doing exactly the right thing – they were using lukewarm water to cool the burns.

"The woman was suspected of being the slightly more serious of the two. After assessment and treatment at the scene she was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham by ambulance. One of the critical care paramedics from the air ambulance travelled with the crew.

“The man was also assessed and treated at the scene. He too was taken by ambulance to the same hospital, again with a critical care paramedic travelling with the ambulance crew.”

Witnesses described seeing the air ambulances land - one in a field opposite the marina and another in a yard to the right of the marina - just after 7pm.

A spokesman for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 6.46pm to Stourport Marina in Sandy Lane to reports of a fire.

"Crews attended from Worcester and Droitwich. On arrival, there was no sign of a fire.

"Crews isolated utilities and moved gas bottles and fuel cans from a boat.

"Two casualties, a man and a woman, were left in the care of paramedics and the incident was closed at 10.41pm."
