A DETERMINED youngster from Kidderminster is set to scale Mount Snowdon for the second time in a month in aid of the autism charity supporting his cousin.

Alex Mason, 12, successfully climbed to the top of Snowdon with his dad Barry on July 20 and boldly pledged to repeat the challenge if he could raise £600 for charity MAIN, which provides respite care for his 15-year-old cousin Andrew.

With his fundraising total now standing at over £700, the Stourport High School student is now preparing to climb Wales' highest peak yet again in the next two weeks.

Dad Barry said: "Alex had been asking to do a fundraising challenge for a couple of years since I did the Seven Deadlies challenge two years ago.

"Alex is a member of the Stourport Spartans basketball club but he was missing that activity and sport so we started doing the Couch to 5k along the canal paths. One day he asked if we could climb Snowdon during the lockdown and I said absolutely.

"I work for a charity so he understands the importance of being generous and raising funds to help other people.

"His cousin Andrew has Lowe syndrome which is a rare disorder with high care needs and is a regular user of MAIN, so we decided to do the climb for the charity.

"They're trying to raise enough funds each month to keep going and they have been absolutely brilliant during the lockdown while the schools have been shut by continuing to provide respite for my nephew."

The father son duo managed to climb Snowdon and reach the bottom again in five and a half hours.

Alex said: "It was very challenging at some points - especially near the top because it's quite rocky.

"I'm now going to have to do it again because I said in a video on Facebook I would climb it again if I raised £600.

"I'm feeling better about it this time because I've already done it."
