A MUM is asking for support to buy her five-year-old son with severe physical and learning disabilities a specialised cot bed to help him sleep.

Mum Leeann Barnett said her young boy Bobby was diagnosed with Angelman syndrome at the age of 18 months old and will need support throughout his life.

This is a complex genetic disorder that affects the nervous system and causes severe physical and learning difficulties.

Bobby, from Holt Fleet in Worcester, is non-verbal and is also unable to walk independently.

As he suffers with severe sleep difficulties and has no sense of danger, his occupational therapist has recommended a Theraposture Olaf cot bed.

The family have been quoted £8,995 for the specialised bed which will aid Bobby's wellbeing and help with his posture and comfort at night.

Mrs Barnett, aged 33, said: “The bed would mean so much to us to know Bobby is safe and secure at night.

“Bobby is a happy, loving little boy who never fails to brighten up a room and make you smile. We appreciate your help and support to raise the money we need for Bobby to be able to sleep safe and comfortable at night.”

At 18 months old Bobby had a cluster of seizures where he went into epileptic status and was in hospital for seven weeks. Bobby was then diagnosed with epilepsy.

The mum-of-three added: “Blood tests were taken during his stay in hospital. Three months later we went for a routine blood test and was called in by his paediatrician. Unexpectedly they had the results back and Bobby was diagnosed with Angelman syndrome which we had never heard of.

“They said it effects 1 in 15000 to 20000 and we were told it was very unlikely Bobby would walk or talk.

“We had our concerns when Bobby was 10 months old as he was not meeting his milestones he couldn’t babble or sit unaided.”

Bobby has also recently been diagnosed with a mild case of scoliosis, alongside this he also has slight dislocation of the hips and requires 24-hour care.

The bed the family are planning to buy would give him better comfort and support.

They are hoping to raise £5,000 towards buying the bed. If you would like to help, visit
