Manager Amadur Rahman said: “I had a family member in hospital recently and the care and the compassion received will be something I won’t forget. In a crisis like this we wanted to do something to contribute to the community. We are in the fortunate position to be able to provide something of use. We don’t know if we will come out of it in the end. So, if this is to be our last stand it might as well be a noble one.”

ID will be required from NHS staff to redeem their takeaway box.

The Toby Carvery in Bath Road offered free food to customers on Monday. Donations were contributed to St Richard’s Hospice.

The pub posted on its Facebook page: “Due to social distance we are operating a one in one out policy and ask that you keep distance from others if there is a queue. Compulsory hand sanitiser will be given on entry.”

Another Indian restaurant, Balti Mahal in Astwood Road, is offering a 15 per cent discount on food to all key workers.

Mazedul Shakil, of the restaurant, said: “We want to give something back to our hard-working public sector workers and key workers, who work for the NHS, police, armed forces, fire, ambulance and other key workers.

" This is just a small gesture to thank our hardworking public sector roles and key workers during this COVID 19 pandemics.”

To redeem the scheme, customers will show their badge for their association for verification when placing an order.

The Red Lion in Holt Heath is also planning on cooking hot meals to be handed out to NHS staff.
