The number coronavirus cases in the UK has jumped by 54 to 373.

In an update on Tuesday afternoon, the Department of Health confirmed as of 9am on March 10, a total of 26,261 people have been tested.

The number of those tested across the country has risen by 1,301 in a single day.

So far, a total of six patients who tested positive for the virus have died.

The sixth patient who passed away was in their eighties and had underlying health conditions.

They were being treated by West Hertfordshire Hospital.

Professor Chris Whitty, chief medical officer, added: "It appears the virus was aquired in the UK and full contact tracing has begun."

A fifth person who contracted the virus had died on Monday.

The patient, who was in their seventies, was being treated at St Helier Hospital and also had underlying health conditions.

  • London: 91
  • Midlands: 36
  • North East and Yorkshire: 24
  • North West: 37

How many cases are there in Scotland?

  • The number of Scots diagnosed with coronavirus has increased to 27, the Scottish Government confirmed.
  • The total number of positive tests for the disease, known as Covid-19, has risen by four from Monday.
  • So far there have been 2,234 tests for the virus carried out in Scotland, of which 2,207 were negative.

What should I do if I've been abroad?

Returning travellers should stay indoors and avoid contact with other people if they have travelled to the UK from the following places, even if you do not have symptoms:

  • Anywhere in Italy on or after March 9
  • Specific areas in northern Italy in the last 14 days
  • Iran in the last 14 days
  • Hubei province in China in the last 14 days
  • Daegu, Cheongdo or Gyeongsan in South Korea in the last 14 days

Those who have arrived back should stay indoors and avoid contact with other people if they have travelled to the UK from the following places in the last 14 days and have a cough, high temperature or shortness of breath, even if the symptoms are mild:

  • Italy (outside specific areas in northern Italy) before March 9
  • Mainland China outside of Hubei province
  • South Korea outside of Daegu, Cheongdo and Gyeongsan
  • Cambodia
  • Hong Kong
  • Japan
  • Laos
  • Macau
  • Malaysia
  • Myanmar
