PLANS to build a brand new leisure centre in Dudley have officially been given the green light by planning bosses.

The planning application for a new two-storey leisure centre on Flood Street has been officially approved by Dudley Council's development control committee, smoothing the way for work to start early next year.

The centre, which is expected to open in 2021, will include a 25 metre swimming pool, state-of-the-art gym, sports hall, flexible studio and meeting spaces, spin studio, adventure soft play and an onsite café.

The Crystal Leisure Centre in Stourbridge and Halesowen leisure centre will also be revamped as part of the plans, which is currently estimated to cost in the region of £31 million.

Alan Lunt, deputy chief executive of Dudley Council, said: "The Dudley Leisure Centre proposals have now been through the full planning process and we’re looking forward to works getting underway early in the new year.

"This fantastic new centre will enhance the town centre offer and plays a part in Dudley’s regeneration."

The existing centre on Wellington Road will remain open while work on the Flood Street site takes place.
