PUPILS and teachers are thrilled that their school has been awarded a Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM).

After receiving the award, headteacher of Hollymount School, Emma Pritchard, said: "Everyone at Hollymount is thrilled to have received the Primary Science Quality Mark Outreach award.

“It reflects the excellent subject leadership of Miss Hoare, and the hard work of all staff, to ensure science is a strength of our school.

Miss Pritchard added: “We are proud to work with other schools and organisations to continually develop our science curriculum so that it provides excellent opportunities for our pupils, parents and community.”

She added: “Schools that achieve PSQM demonstrate commitment and expertise in science teaching and leadership.”

The PSQM programme ensures effective leadership of science, enables schools to work together to share good practice and is supported by development led by local experts.

It encourages teacher independence and innovation while at the same time offering a clear framework for development in science subject leadership, teaching and learning.

The award was given to the school in Hollymount Road on October 24.

The PSQM feedback form said: “Any visitor to your school could not fail to be impressed by the value and importance you place on science.

“Quality displays about the school are evident as well as a central one for all to see. You also do a lot of work with your community such as the science afternoons and make concerted efforts with events like STEM week and stargazing to involve parents and the community.

“There are clear and relevant links to a number of other subject areas such as maths, design and technology and citizenship, which support children in seeing how science exists in a wider context. These add variety as well as understanding.”

The award has been given to 300 infant, junior, primary, middle and special schools to celebrate a commitment to excellence in science teaching and learning.

So far, since its national launch in 2010, over 3500 schools across the country have achieved a PSQM award.
