MALVERN’S MP has reacted to the latest developments in parliament which saw the government pause its Brexit bill after MPs rejected the plan to pass it in three days.

Harriet Baldwin said she was disappointed that MPs chose to vote against the timetabling motion for further scrutiny, saying it “can mean only more dither and delay.”

She said: “I voted to back this deal and I am pleased that the majority of MPs have also confirmed their assent.

“I have now voted four times in support of a deal which means that we leave the European Union in a smooth and orderly way.

“More than anything else, we all want certainty as we carry out the task of delivering the result of the referendum.

“It is a shame that the Bill has now been paused, but I take some confidence from the fact that the House of Commons has now indicated the sort of deal that it will support as we approach the October 31 deadline.”

Lib Dem Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC) for West Worcestershire, Beverley Nielsen, said: “I am very pleased Parliament has insisted on a longer period to review the PM’s Withdrawal Agreement Bill. It’s hard to understand how our own MP thinks it’s proper to give less time to this Bill affecting our entire population than Parliament gave to the Wild Animals in Circuses Act, affecting 19 animals, as one MP notably pointed out.

“Questions remain too around the impact on workers’ rights and environmental protections, with a risk of a No-Deal Brexit if we do not complete a Free Trade Agreement in record time before the end of the transition period.”
