The Grovewood Restaurant & Bar at The Malvern Spa is a pleasant surprise for more reasons than one; not only has the whole restaurant had a huge revamp and refurbishment but it may also come as news to many to know that the restaurant is open to the public as well as the Spa guests.

At lunchtime the doors open and give non-guests the opportunity to enjoy an impressive menu with the choice of sandwiches, salads and light bites to tasty mains, grills, burgers and even an impressive sounding smorgasbord.

In the evening the robed spa guests and lunches are replaced with a more stylish yet welcoming a la carte menu, cocktails and the opportunity to enjoy a quality meal in modern and welcoming surroundings.

It was the lunch menu we experienced when we visited on a Tuesday afternoon.

Greeted by a friendly and attentive waiter, it initially did seem different to be dining alongside spa guests, but the relaxed atmosphere was warming and on inspection of the menu, we were met with plenty of choice for all tastes including good vegetarian options.

We started with an Asian-inspired Yakatori Glazed Pork Belly and Crumbed Halloumi, both came to the table in good time and were excellent – the halloumi a particular hit.

Both starters were also very reasonably priced and were certainly big enough to be enjoyed as a light lunch on their own.

For mains we opted for Beef Bourguignon, served with buttered mash and a Butterfly Chicken Breast Burger, with spiced tomato chutney and served with perfectly cooked chips.

The beef was beautifully tender in a rich tasty sauce accompanied by some fresh carrots and the perfect amount of creamy mash.

The chicken burger proved to big to finish but was also excellent, served in a brioche bun with all the trimmings it was just too much after the halloumi starter! Again, both meals were generously priced for the amount and the quality served.

The attentive service throughout was in keeping with the restaurant; relaxed and welcoming.

We were told that the hope is the The Grovewood Restaurant & Bar can be seen by local residents and visitors to the area as a place to go and enjoy a lunch or dinner and not just a place for guests to enjoy a meal between use of the impressive spa facilities.

Based on our lunchtime experience they are certainly on the right track with a stunning refurbishment, good menu choices and excellent food.

We will certainly be recommending the restaurant to friends and family.
