A NEW 'more fitting' memorial in Gheluvelt, Belgium for the Worcestershire Regiment will be installed thanks to county fundraisers.

Next year, members of Worcestershire Ambassadors will cycle from Gheluvelt Park in Worcester to Gheluvelt in Belgium, to arrive on October 31 to unveil a new memorial for the Worcestershire Regiment that fought in the Battle of Gheluvelt in 1914.

Members of the Ambassadors, which raises money for local good causes, visited the battlefield this summer. A spokesman said: "The visit to the site of the Gheluvelt battle was very poignant insofar as this was one battle we all knew about where the Worcestershire regiment famously defeated the German troops. As we gathered round the memorial and read its inscription, we all felt that the Ambassadors could and should do something to try and enhance this site and its signage.

"The board have decided that in 2020 – our 20th anniversary – we will focus on Gheluvelt, raising both funds and awareness."

A launch event will be held at Gheluvelt Park this October 31.
