AS we head towards the end of the school holiday period once again, Great Comberton – nestled in the slopes of Bredon Hill and above the River Avon – is getting ready for its 73rd annual flower show.

It’s one of the county’s most intimate events and has a strong following of regulars who visit year in and year out.

As usual, the centrepiece of the afternoon is the marquee which will be full of competition entries of fruits, vegetables, flowers, arts and crafts.

This year’s theme is Circus, so there will be circus-inspired art, floral and children’s classes which are open to all and the villagers and the show will become one large circus. There’s juggling as well as circus games.

The second ever National Plum Jerkum competition will also be held, sponsored by Pershore Plum Festival, who will be opening the show.

There are a whole range of events to suit all ages including a children’s fancy dress competition, novelty dog show, face painting, skittles, classic cars, plank plodding, and the hilarious egg throwing competition. Stalls include a fully stocked white elephant, tombola, beer and prosecco tent, barbecue and WI afternoon teas accompanied by music from Little Dave.  The grand draw has lots of experience prizes and a first prize of £100. It’s a quintessential English afternoon out in Braille’s Orchard at the centre of the village. Car parking and children are free, with entry fee for adults £2.50. Full details, including entry forms, can be found at www.theflowershow.org.uk

The action is on Saturday, August 24, kicking off at 2pm.
