Boris Johnson will announce the 20 NHS hospitals in England that will benefit from his £850 million spending pledge - but Redditch's Alexandra is not one of them.

The Prime Minister will make the commitment as part of his £1.8 billion cash injection for the health service.

Redditch MP Rachel Maclean, who has pushed for services to be returned to the embattled hospital, said: "To say I'm disappointed is an understatement.

"In the time I had I did all I could to ensure the Alex was on the list of upgrades."

On Prime Minister Johnson’s first full day in office Mrs Maclean used her first question to the new PM to press him on the Alexandra Hospital.

In his first speech on the steps of 10 Downing Street shortly after becoming Prime Minister, he announced plans to upgrade 20 hospitals across the country.

Mrs Maclean took the opportunity to use her first question to ask him to add the Alex and Worcestershire Royal Hospital to his list of 20 hospitals to upgrade.

Speaking afterwards she said: “I started as I mean to go on by ensuring our new Prime Minister is aware that the Alex hospital is a top priority for me, but also a top priority for the people of Redditch."
