DOGS can travel for free on the Severn Valley Railway this Friday.

The SVR is hosting its first Doggy Day Out on June 28, which includes free travel onboard its heritage steam trains and a treat for the first 20 canine passengers.

Events co-ordinator Lewis Maddox said: "Not many people know that they can bring their dogs on our heritage trains, and that each of our stations has some great dog-walking routes to enjoy.

"You can even bring your dog to The Engine House too.

"It’s a great way to enjoy a family day out, without having to leave part of the family at home and it’s easy to hop on and off the trains and explore the beautiful countryside all around us."

The event is being supported by Kidderminster's Jane Curtis, whose Skye terriers Barney and Baylie both scooped awards in this year's Crufts.

Passengers can board a train from Kidderminster or Bridgnorth.

Severn Valley Country Park is the suggested stop-off point for riverside walks and picnic areas, with a number of routes of varying distances.

The ground floor of The Engine House Visitor Centre is next on the list for dogs and their owners to explore.

Owners can visit one of the SVR’s dog-friendly pubs – The Railwayman’s Arms at Bridgnorth station or the King & Castle at Kidderminster - and there are also a range of dog-friendly eateries near to the stations at Hampton Loade, Highley, Arley and Bewdley.

The usual £3 ticket price for dogs includes unlimited travel along the line during the day, plus entry to The Engine House. There is no charge for assistance dogs.
