A WORKING group to help fix damage to a medieval church are stepping up their efforts to reach their target.

The first quote for the repairs to Madley Parish Church were estimated to be in the region of £750,000, although quotes have since dropped slightly.

John Dinnen is chairman of the working group and he described the building as a very large and priceless, Grade I listed medieval building and in recent years various parts of the roof have been leaking. The stone pinnacles around the chancel are becoming eroded and rainwater has been damaging the organ.

He said sometimes rain runs down into the chapel in the crypt underneath the chancel. To help raise more funds, an auction is being held next Saturday, with lots including golf days, weekend breaks and a touring caravan for a week.

"We have had all sorts of efforts, including a sponsored pilgrimage to Hereford Cathedral, collecting tins in Madley village shop and a classic car rally," Dr Dinnen said.

"Our next effort will be an auction in the village hall on 29th June."

The repairs to the chancel alone will cost in the region of £90,000 and have so far been help by the Church Commissioners, as well as grants from National Lottery Awards For All, Herefordshire Historic Churches Trust and local businesses.
