A DEDICATED Redditch woman will be jogging, walking and crawling a 50 mile route in just one day to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Sonia Tudor has decided to organise the event to both celebrate her 50th birthday and give back to the charity for all it did for her mum and dad whilst they were both facing a cancer diagnosis.

Sonia, 49, said: "In 2002, my beautiful mum was diagnosed with cancer.

"Eight weeks later, my mother had died - she was only 50.

"In our darkest hour, the Macmillan nurse came to our home. She was the calm in our storm. She was our angel. She even came to my mum’s funeral. Our Macmillan nurse made such an impact on us and I truly believe that until you’ve had a Macmillan nurse in your life, you won’t understand how incredible they are."

Sadly, in 2010, Sonia’s dad also died from lung cancer at the age of 58.

Once again, Sonia and her family received invaluable support from a local Macmillan nurse.

As a result of the care both her mum and her dad received from Macmillan, Sonia decided to become a Macmillan volunteer.

Sonia said, ‘We wanted to give something back so we went into our local Macmillan volunteer office and they signed us up there and then. Over the coming months, we visited everywhere in Redditch asking them to have a collection can on their counters by 2003 we had approximately 180 cans that we serviced every month we collected emptied counted and cleaned the cans.

"My role with Macmillan changed a little then I was made an ambassador for Worcestershire which I’m super proud and honoured to represent my county. I’m hugely proud and honoured to be a Macmillan volunteer."

If volunteering wasn’t enough, Sonia has now decided to extend her ever growing fundraising record for Macmillan by taking on a 50 mile circuit around Arrow Valley Lake in Redditch.

On August 12 Sonia will be tying up her shoe laces and jogging, walking and maybe even crawling from 7am.

She will not stop until she has reached the 50 mile total.

Sarah Diston, from Macmillan, said: "Nothing is ever too much trouble and I’m not at all surprised she has decided celebrate her birthday by organising a fundraising event. 50 miles is a huge challenge but rain or shine Sonia is out there training and she loves running so I’m confident she’ll do it."
