Boys aged 6 to 8 who enjoy singing are being invited to join Hereford Cathedral for a morning to discover what life is like as a cathedral chorister.

The Chorister Open Morning takes place on Saturday 9 March from 9.30 am to 12 noon to give boys an opportunity to experience singing with a cathedral choir.

Held in the historic cloisters, the morning also gives families the opportunity to see what happens behind the scenes.

The choir is beginning a search for three or four new boys who enjoy singing to join in 2019 or 2020.

Last year was a 'spectacular' one for the cathedral choir with a string of high-profile performances, beginning with a concert at Buckingham Palace hosted by HRH The Prince of Wales.

In June the choir was invited to sing at a Papal Mass in front of thousands of people in St Peter’s Square, Rome. The choir also performed in the Sistine Chapel at an annual concert for the diplomatic corps of the Vatican.

It concluded the summer by performing in the Three Choirs Festival in Hereford.

Geraint Bowen, Director of Music, said: "Being part of a cathedral choir can provide countless opportunities for truly memorable performances, as our choristers have discovered over the last year.

"We are looking for boys who enjoy singing and being part of a team, and it is not necessary for them to have had any previous choral experience or to play an instrument, although that is certainly an advantage.

"When we select choristers it is musical potential we are looking for. It is the training they receive at the cathedral and the hard work that they put in which produces the results.’

Places on the open morning are free but advance booking is essential as space is limited.
