A FATHER has spoken out after he suffered a terrifying attack outside his home which saw him repeatedly bludgeoned with a metal pole.

Barry Brittle, aged 44, was attacked by an unknown assailant as he made the short walk from his front door to his car as he left to go to work on Bayswater Road, Lower Gornal.

The assault took place just after 6.20am on Thursday January 10, and the father-of-two is still left shaken by the attack which left him with multiple head, shoulder and leg injuries.

Mr Brittle said: "As I was about to get into the car I heard somebody running. I quickly turned around and there was a guy a foot away from me with his arm raised above his head with something in his hand."

He was then subjected to seven blows, three of which were to his head.

The savage attack left Mr Brittle needing 15 stitches to his head and fractured his shoulder in three places.

His ankle was left 'like a balloon' and he is still wearing a cast for his shoulder, which may also need a pin to help it to heal.

Two weeks on, Mr Brittle is still suffering from headaches and even blackouts.

Mr Brittle continued: "It was completely unprovoked. It wasn't a robbery, I dropped my car keys during the attack and he didn't try to steal the car.

"He knew exactly where to be at what time. He must have been watching me for a while."

Through a CCTV camera attached to his house and footage from a neighbour's camera, Mr Brittle has been able to piece together what the assailant did in the moments before and after the attack.

He said: "At 6.10 you can see the guy loitering around. He comes out of shot then runs towards me."

After the attack the man ran off towards an alley leading to Central Drive.

Mr Brittle has lived at his home for 13 years, and says this is the first time anything like this has ever happened.

He said: "It's a good estate and the neighbours are brilliant. Nothing like this has happened before."

A police spokesperson said: "Police are investigating after a man was assaulted in Bayswater Road, Lower Gornal, at around 6.20am on 10 January.

"The man, in his 40s, was taken to hospital with cuts to his head and shoulder injuries.
