A RESIDENT has his back in defence of his area after it was called 'an old peoples town.'

Bruce Thomas from Droitwich challenged the statement in Worcester News last week, from Barry Knott who was calling for the reintroduction of the Charter Market as a means of reinvigorating the town.

Mr Thomas said: "senior citizens can remember when the town not only had a flourishing indoor market but the prestigious Worcestershire Hotel and the Raven Hotel."

"The babyboomers born at the end of the second World War didn't have I pads etc in their formative years but endured rationing yet after toiling for 50 years working to rebuild this country are now faced with a Tory government that has decided to do away with free TV licences for the over 75s, cut vital services and make life difficult for its senior citizens."

Mr Thomas said he does support the return of the Charter Market, after the Town Council said it could return after it was stopped 12 months ago, but believes older people should be made to feel welcome: "More Droitwich people should get on the local councils and then the glass strewn pavements leading into the town might be swept thus enabling mobility scooters to visit the town centre."
