Healthy food is on the menu in Catshill this month in a bid to help families make good choices when it comes to meal times.

A ‘taster’ workshop is being held at the Tulip Centre on Wednesday, January 23 for parents and families to get tips and advice on healthy eating.

Families can drop in to the session between 10.30am and 2.30pm and enough interest in the workshop could mean it would become a more regular feature with courses provided in partnership with schools.

Councillor, Margaret Sherrey, whose portfolio covers health and wellbeing, said: “The NHS have said that ‘more than one in five children are overweight or obese when they begin school, and one in three children are overweight or obese by the time they leave primary school so it is really important that we pass on positive healthy eating behaviours to children and educate families.

“With so much conflicting information in the media nowadays it can be really difficult to know what is really healthy for our families as well as knowing how to cook it on a budget.

“If your New Year’s resolution is to have a healthy household, do drop in and see our nutritionists, have a go at cooking and see how you can make better choices for your family.”

The statistics are from a government report on child obesity and the workshop has been funded by the Oakland Foundation, who support organisations locally to deliver programmes for children and families.

At the session participants can get dietary advice as well as the opportunity to cook a meal with a nutritionist.

There will also be numerous stations set up to look at breakfast and sugar content, how to cook cheap healthy meals, packed lunches, budgeting for healthy meals and snacks and what a healthy plate looks like.

School nurses and youth officers will also be on hand to offer advice and guidance.
