THE fate of a nightclub facing closure over police concerns of “continued” crime and disorder could be decided today (Monday).

Alexanders in New Street was the subject of a licensing review by Worcester City Council and a decision on whether to revoke its license was due to be made at a meeting on Tuesday last week (December 4).

The review was made after concerns were raised by West Mercia Police about continued disorder at the nightclub.

All of the evidence was not heard by the licensing subcommittee and a decision was not reached, meaning the hearing was pushed back to today (December 10).

New information shared prior to the meeting last week meant it was delayed by more than two hours to allow for councillors to read the details.

The Worcester News was eventually kicked out of the meeting and the hearing was held in private.

Councillor Roger Knight, who was elected chairman of the subcommittee, said the meeting would be held in private because the new information was sensitive and could prejudice an ongoing investigation.

Owner Alexander Fell previously said he was “dismayed” to hear the police had requested a review and, following the police’s support for his application to extend trading hours earlier this year, he was “really concerned” about the force’s latest move.

West Mercia Police believes the licence holder is “failing to adequately promote” licensing objectives in relation to prevention of crime and disorder, public safety and protection of children from harm.
