WORCESTER’S MP has backed embattled Prime Minister Theresa May, and defended the controversial Brexit deal that has split her party.

There were turbulent scenes at Westminster today with the PM facing tough questions from across the House of Commons on her deal, and several resignations including Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab.

When it was the announced the deal had her Cabinet’s backing on Wednesday night the PM had called it a “decisive step” and “a decision which is in the best interests of our entire United Kingdom.”

But speculation has been mounting that numerous letters of no confidence in the PM were being handed in to the 1922 Committee.

Under, Conservative party rules, if the number of letters reach 48, the party would trigger a formal confidence vote.

Defending the deal Robin Walker, a Brexit minister, said: “The deal is there now for everyone to see, in black and white. I have been working on this for the past two years. A lot of people are focussing on the political fallout but people need to recognise this is the first time the EU has accepted we are leaving.”

The MP described it as a “good deal”, saying it ensured frictionless trade, and solved the Northern Ireland border issue. He added it would have the support of businesses, such as Mazak and Worcester Bosch, that “want to see certainty.”

Asked if he thought the deal would get through Parliament he said: “I always knew it was going to be tough - I do think it will get through. By the time it goes before Parliament it will have the support of the government and the EU.”

He said MPs should act in the national interest and for their constituents.

Mr Walker added the PM had always been put in a difficult position with pressure from remainers and what he called 'extreme Brexiteers'.

“I am sad to see Dominic Raab go,” he said.

“I have seen the speculation, that is a matter for them. The PM has my support, and the support of all the Worcestershire MPs.”
