THE Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regimental Association will host a ceremony at the regimental stone in Gheluvelt Park to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Gheluvelt.

The ceremony, on WEdnesday, October 31, also celebrates the park’s inclusion in the Fields in Trust Centenary Legacy Programme.

The programme was launched in 2014 to champion green spaces and war memorials, and to honour the millions who contributed to the war effort a century ago.

The park, managed by Worcester City Council, commemorates the Worcester Regiment’s victory and remembers the 400 soldiers who fought and the 187 who were killed or wounded that day.

Members of the association will hold a short wreath-laying ceremony in the park, with standards and bugle.

The association will also be in the park at 11.30am on Sunday, October 28 for their annual commemorative service of the Battle of Gheluvelt.

Cllr James Stanley said: “The city council is delighted to demonstrate our gratitude to the World War I generation by participating in the Legacy Programme."
