WHEN Tony Hawks saw a man standing by the side of the road with a fridge attempting to hitch a lift, he had little idea that he would be doing the same thing himself before too long.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes and I thought what an amazing place Ireland must be that this wasn’t even a talking point,” he says, explaining how telling the story at a dinner party led to a friend betting him £100 to travel the circumference of Ireland in a month, with a fridge for company. “Somebody suggested I talk to Gerry Ryan at RTE and as I was staying opposite the studios I rang him, and then talked to him every couple of days on the radio and got a cult following, feted as I went, with people calling me ‘fridge man’ or the ‘eejit with the fridge’.

“It turned out to be such an incredible adventure - quite Zen in its way - that I wrote a book about it, and then a film. It taught me not to take everything too seriously. You stand a better chance in life if you’re smiling and happy.”

The film based on Tony’s bestselling book now comes to Flicks in the Sticks, with an appearance by the man himself at the Lydbury North screening on Tuesday, October 5.

Tony Hawks will personally introduce the film and host a question and answer session afterwards.

Once again Flicks in the Sticks is offering a unique evening’s entertainment which is affordable and is on your doorstep.

“We pride ourselves on the informal, friendly screenings providing high quality professional service that keeps our small communities alive and interesting, bringing people together in their local neighbourhood,”

says Ian Kerry, director of Flicks in the Sticks.
