SUPPORT is pouring in for the campaign to raise money in memory of Ludlow teenager Joel Lawrence.

The 19-year-old died just a few weeks ago less than six months after being diagnosed with stomach cancer.

Joel, who lived in Sandpitts Road, was cared for over the final months of his life by the Severn Hospice in Shrewsbury.

It was his wish before he died that money should be raised to help the hospice.

His family and friends rallied round and have organised a programme of fund-raising with the first big event being a charity football tournament at Ludlow Football Club on Sunday.

The tournament is intended to be a ‘fun’ event and will involve seven-a-side teams playing short matches on a small pitch. Mixed and women’s teams will also be taking part – each paying £20 to play.

A week ago, there were nine teams lined up but in a few days the number has increased to 26, which guarantees more than £500 for the charity before any donations have been made.

The day will also include music and face painting so organisers are promising there will be something for all the family.

“People have responded in a fantastic way and the tournament has attracted so much interest,” said Di Ward, a friend of the family, who will be playing in a team with Joel’s mum Zoe.

“As well as the football teams, we have had people who say they do not fancy playing but want to make a donation.”

There is still time to enter the tournament, being organised by Malcolm Morris, who runs the Station Road Garage in Ludlow.

Other events are being planned to raise money for the appeal in the future.
