A BID to get a decision to scrap community skips in South Shropshire overturned has failed.

Agreement to discontinue the community skip service provided in the former South Shropshire district will not be ‘called in’ for further examination by councillors – meaning the service will cease at the end of this month.

Residents are now being encouraged to make use of other waste and recycling ser vices available to them when the skip service ends.

Shropshire Council’s cabinet agreed to discontinue the skip ser vice saying the move would reduce the amount of recyclable waste that goes to landfill. Members also cited safety concerns at sites where the skip service is provided.

Following the decision, councillors had an opportunity to request that the decision be reconsidered by its development ser vices scrutiny committee.

A request was made but has now been blocked by the committee chairman, Alan Mosley. He said he felt that no information had been presented which had not previously been discussed.

The council says collections of plastic bottles are being rolled out across the county in the coming year, in addition to existing services.

“These have helped to ensure that Shropshire’s recycling rate is one of the best in the country and is increasing every year,” said Larry Wolfe, head of waste management.

“I encourage all local people to make use of these services to help further boost our recycling rate, and to ensure that less waste ends up in landfill sites.”App
