HEALTH CHECK – The local Rotarians have arranged for a free drop-in session for stroke/health awareness checks to be held at the Parish Centre on Saturday from 10am-4pm. All welcome.

PUBLIC MEETINGS – A public meeting has been arranged for tomorrow (Friday) to set up a local U3A group for people interested in learning for pleasure. The group would be keen to hear what special interests people would like it to offer. To find out more, ring 01694 722922.

PARISH ASSEMBLY – The 44th annual parish assembly will take place at the Silvester Horne Institute on Tuesday, April 27, at 7pm and is open to all members of the public.

CHOIRS – Tomorrow (Friday), the Choir Of One Accord will make a return visit to Church Stretton School. Tickets cost £6 and are being sold through Burway Books and John Thomas Florists, with proceeds going to Rotary charities.

Moving to Saturday, May 1, the Craven Arms Men’s Chorus will be in concert for May Day at the Methodist Church at 7.30pm. Tickets are £6 and are also being sold through Burway Books and John Thomas Florists.

ILLUSTRATED TALK – Running the Gauntlet is the title of an illustrated talk by Caroline Magnus of Stokesay Court at the meeting of the CPRE at the Methodist Church on Wednesday, April 28, at 7.30pm. She will include anecdotes about the filming of Atonement. Entry for non-members is £3.

SENIOR CITIZENS – The next meeting of the Senior Citizens Club will take the form of an outing to the Alf Strange Museum at Welsh Frankton, with lunch included, tomorrow (Friday) and will leave at 10.30am from the car park OUTINGS – The local Gardening Club is organising a trip to the Malvern Spring Gardening Show on Friday, May 7, leaving at 10am and returning by 4.30pm. TENNIS – There will be an open morning at the tennis courts in Town Park on Sunday from 10.30am when everyone is invited to try a game. The tennis club is also offering a nine-week course of junior coaching at the Town Park from Saturday, May 8, suitable for all abilities and for ages five-16. Ring 01694 723916 to find out more.

COURSES – The National Trust is due to run a course of five sessions, including three field trips, on an Introduction to the Wildflowers of the Shropshire Hills from Wednesday, April 28, through to August. To book for this, ring 01694 722631. The course costs £25.

GUIDED WALKS – There will be a National Trust early morning guided walk to hear the dawn chorus on Sunday, May 2. A breakfast will be served at 9am in the National Trust tea rooms, included in the £12 cost. On Thurs-day, May 6, there is a guided birdwatching walk from the Chalet Pavilion followed by a hot lunch at 1pm, included in the £15 fee.

WORKSHOP – The next creative workshop at Mayfair is on Saturday, May 8, when sculptor Jane Robbins will lead a relief tile workshop from 10am-4pm. Cost of the workshop is £25. Places are limited so enquire early on 01694 722077 SPONSORED WALKS – This week-end, there is a sponsored walk for the Afghan Heroes in memory of Corporal Jonathan Horne of the 2nd Battalion, The Rifles, who was killed in action on July 10. This 12- mile walk starts from All Stretton on Sunday, with a one-mile walk for children and parents. Entry is £5 but free if your sponsorship is greater than that. YOGA KIDS – Free sessions of yoga for key stage one children are due to start at Church Stretton School from 4pm-5pm on Friday, April 30. FLOWER CLUB – On Tuesday, April 27, the local Flower Club holds its annual meeting, which will be followed by a demonstration by Susan Tudge, of Market Drayton, called Spring Time. Visitors are welcome to attend at 7.30pm in All Stretton Village Hall.

CAMERA CLUB – Longmynd Camera Club members meet for the Photographer of the Year competition on Wednesday, April 28. The subject is ‘Open’ and the judge is Peter Gennard MFIAP, EFIAP/p. The winners of the league table will be announced. Meetings are held in the URC Hall at 7.30pm and visitors are always welcome. A new programme of events will be arranged from September.

BOOK FAIR – A book fair will be held at the Silvester Horne Institute on Saturday, May 1, from 10am-4pm. Admission is 50p, no charge for children, and proceeds will go to Mayfair Community Centre.

WEEKEND REMINDERS – Tomorrow (Friday) is film night at All Stretton Village Hall and the film to be screened is La Vie en Rose at 7.30pm. Admission is £4. On Saturday at 7.30pm at Church Stretton School, there is a chance to enjoy a get-together at Garage Praise with refreshments and music. The Pycoob Dance Festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday at All Stretton Village Hall and Mayfair Community Centre. For details, ring 01743 356638. On Saturday, the presentation of darts awards will take place at the District Club and a professional darts player will be on hand .

CELEBRATION – The celebration of the new leisure centre was a great community event, attracting many visitors who were able to watch the demonstrations and take part in the have-a-go sessions. Up to 90 displays provided by local groups were on view in the school, where there was also refreshments and musical entertainment. It was a well-planned event in superb spring weather. The evening ended with a performance by Three Men in a Bow Tie at the school theatre.
