MRS S Kerr (Advertiser, April 1) accuses me of having promised to seek a fourth term as Conservative MP for Ludlow. Nothing could be further from the truth.

As a matter of principle, I declined to renew my membership of the Conservative Party whilst still an MP and nothing would have induced me to seek re-election as a Tory other than an undertaking from the then Party leader that he would lead a crusade for Britain's freedom and independence.

William Hague refused to give me that assurance. His refusal told me all I needed to know about the future direction of the Tory Party, which has now become an integral part of the pro-EU Lib/Lab/Con.

I believe that the best form of government is self-government – they clearly do not !

As for broken promises, Mrs Kerr’s comments might best be pointed in David Cameron's direction – the man who broke his ‘cast iron’ promise of a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.
