OPPOSITION has mounted to plans to "enhance" the Bullring in Ludlow.

A meeting of residents and prominent business representatives has agreed to launch a formal campaign that will aim to keep people informed about all the issues involved.

Leaflets will point out the disadvantages of the scheme, a petition will be organised and residents will be urged to register their objections with councillors and with their MP. There will also be a display staged in Castle Square on Saturday.

The group convened by Graeme Perks, South Shropshire District Council member for Ludlow and Ludlow Chamber of Trade's vice-chairman, is concerned about plans to narrow the Bullring streets and turn a section of the Corve Street to Old Street crossing into an alternate one-way traffic system with traffic lights.

One leading campaigner Ian Leslie, of Gravel Hill, has described the Shropshire County Council scheme as "unnecessary and inappropriate" and likely to create dangers to pedestrians which do not exist at present.

The group has also dubbed the council's consultation exercise at the Buttercross as "window-dressing", arguing that residents and key bodies in the town, including the Chamber of Trade, Civic Society and Ludlow Town Council were not consulted before the plan was finalised.
