Almeley saw a spectacular day of racing over the weekend, as harness racing returned to Herefordshire.
Wales and Border County Harness Racing held a packed day of competition on Saturday, July 4, with classes across all divisions on a track described as being in 'fine condition' throughout.
The opening novice race was won by Don Bobby, driven by Lynne Boxhall and owned by Carolyn Rowlands of Nantmel.
Jayne Bevan’s Full Closure finished second.
The Grade B heats brought success for the Weigel family from Llanddewi Velfrey, with Stateside Icon, driven by Lee Price, taking the first heat and stablemate Hannibal, driven by Mathew Tromans, winning the second.
Hillbilly Jackson claimed victory in the Grade A race with Andrew Bevan from Builth Wells, followed by Zulu Warrior in second and Fold Megastar in third.
Glenfield Thomas, trained in Brecon, took the first baby novice race.
Sonny Camden placed third.
The day's only saddle race—a nod to harness racing tradition—was won by Millstream Art, ridden by Liz George.
Veteran runner Llwyns Mercy finished second.
Manhattan Gangster triumphed in the nursery division, driven by novice Morgan Wolfe.
The dash saw Wye Doon storm to victory for driver Maddy Davies.
In junior competition, Miley Jones from Crybin was first past the post on Afanbellsprincess, with Jacob Bird and Lexey Millard finishing second and third.
A special non-whip race was split between novice and open horses due to high demand.
Full Closure won the novice section, while the open race went to World Famous, driven by Finn Bevan.
Racing returns to Almeley on Saturday, July 11.
