Richards Castle Soap Box Derby returns later this month

Taking place at Hanway Common on June 28, the event will feature karts from across the UK in a lively celebration of creativity, competition, and community spirit.

Now in its 22nd year, the volunteer-run event has raised more than £165,000 for good causes and continues to grow in popularity.

This year’s theme, sponsored by Hobsons Brewery, invites teams to design food and drink-inspired karts, with entries arriving from as far afield as Norfolk, Essex, and Rotherham.

Organisers expect some of the most imaginative creations yet, as teams bring culinary-themed contraptions to life on wheels.

Spectators will be able to vote for their favourite novelty kart throughout the day, with the winner receiving a £500 prize.

The voting booth has been designed and built by the DT department at Moor Park School.

A fully prepared, race-ready kart is available for hire, offering a last-minute opportunity for individuals, groups, businesses, or community organisations to take part in the fun without having to build their own vehicle.

This option makes the event even more accessible to newcomers and seasoned racers alike.

While the racing attracts the crowds, the true purpose of the Soap Box Derby remains supporting local charities.

This year’s event will raise funds for Cleobury Mortimer Community Hub, LOOK (which supports visually impaired young people), and Brimfield and Little Hereford Sports Club.

To further boost fundraising efforts, visitors can enter a raffle to win two tickets to any of the sold-out Live at Ludlow Castle concerts taking place in July.

Beyond the track, the day promises fun for all ages with food and drink stalls, children’s activities, entertainment, and face painting.

Organisers say the event is sure to be a crowd-pleaser, whether you’re cheering on a giant doughnut, a runaway pizza, or this year’s Hobsons Brewery Best Novelty Kart winner.

Gates open at 10am on June 28 at Hanway Common in Richards Castle (SY8 4ET).
