An exercise scheme is currently offering support to help people living with sight loss stay active, connected and confident.

The Exercise on Referral (EOR) programme, delivered at Church Stretton Leisure Centre, provides personalised support in a safe environment for people with visual impairments.

One person who has benefitted from the scheme is Frances, a volunteer with Sight Loss Shropshire who began using the leisure centre’s facilities after being registered as severely sight-impaired.

In April 2023 she attended a Fitness MOT session at the centre and, with encouragement from staff, resumed AquaFit and swimming classes.

She then joined the EOR scheme, meeting with the programme coordinator and beginning a tailored programme of activity that included gym and swim sessions.

Despite some challenges in the gym caused by glare and low-contrast equipment, staff worked with her to introduce practical accessibility improvements.

She also began using the gym with her long white cane for orientation and safety.

Frances said: "I am very grateful for the input and understanding of everybody that will help me continue enjoying exercising at the Leisure Centre."
