AN impressive array of vehicles from Shropshire and beyond gathered for an annual event.
New president and founder member Margaret James opened the 42nd Three Cocks Steam and Vintage Rally, organised by the Three Cocks Vintage Society, at Boatside Farm, Hay on Wye, on August 11.
In her speech she recounted how the society was formed, coming together with the inaugural rally in 1978. The assembled steam engines in the ring blew their whistles in thanks.
As usual, the rally had a selection of tractors, cars, lorries, motorcycles, pedal cycles, steam engines, stationary engines and military vehicles on display.
The activities in the ring started with the parade of steam engines, with local steamers on display.
Tom Henderson had his 1901 Fowler agricultural engine Pride of the Wye, the Williams family had their Fowler TE2 Russian Engine, while Leigh Miles had his 1903 Wallis & Stevens engine.
The Mason family of Hereford had their 1931 Fowler steam roller, originally supplied to West Riding of Yorkshire County Council. It also had local interest having been used by Abermule contractors J E Corfield & Sons up to 1961.
The Dyfed Powys police dog team gave a display showing off their detection and protection work, with society chairman David Price playing the part of the aggressor before two-year-old Dutch shepherd dog Scar was unleashed and raced across the ring to grab his padded arm protector.
The tractor display boasted the regular displays from the David Brown, the International Harvester, and Massey Ferguson clubs, alongside 23 County tractors brought together by the efforts of County fanatic Martyn Nicholls.
Also on display was a 1925 John Deere model D belonging to Mike Yeats of Libanus.
Veteran tractor collector Colin Lewis brought along his tiny Italian Balilla tractor, and Ben Aubrey of Leominster his Austrian Steyr 8130A tractor.
Andy Boyle of Ledbury brought along his Italian 1983 Carraro tractor, while Jac Vaughan of Crymych brought his 1962 Fordson Super Dexta.
Fellow Crymych locals, Wyn and Llyr Mathias displayed their Breconshire-registered 1938 Marshall 12-20.
The commercials display, assembled by Mike Chandler, included his own AEC Mercury.
There were also three Bedfords belonging to Tommy Williams, and Lloyds of Ludlow's AEC and Seddon Atkinson.
Hercules, a big 1956 Scammell Mountaineer belonging to Ketty Barr dwarfed Dave Prosser of Bastonford's little 1950 Standard van, while Phil Ballenger of Bishops Wood's Carnation Milk liveried 1948 Leyland Beaver brought back memories.
Amongst the selection of motorcycles on show were Malcolm Webster’s 1927 Sunbeam M7, R Guest’s 1929 Sunbeam M90 race bike, and Clive Davies of Dorstone's BSA B31.
Also on show was Dylan Phillips of Llanfrynach's motorised Honda-engined wheelbarrow, while Terry Brown of West Pontnewydd brought a selection of Honda Cubs.
