Another “exceptional” sale of 350 top quality store cattle was achieved at Bishops Castle Auction last week, report Halls auctioneers, with Victor Morris securing the champion’s prize with his winning pen of Limousin steers.

“The trade continued to hit the heights with a full ring of buyers from far and wide keenly contesting all lots, producing an overall average of £1,400 per head,” said auctioneer James Evans, a director of Halls.

Prize classes for the Halls Silver Salver were judged by Elwyn Parkes of Church Stretton, assisted by his grandson, Lloyd.

Mr Morris, of SJC Morris & Sons of Whitcott Evan, Craven Arms sold the champion 525kg Limousin steers for £1,695 per head, while Messrs EJ and GM Trickey, Moat Farm, Caersws secured the top two heifer prizes with 420kg and 400kg Limousins at £1,330 and £1,250.

Overall, steers averaged 308p per kilo and £1,440 per head to a high of £1,770 for a British Blue steer from SJC Morris & Sons and 360p per kg for three Limousin cross steers from H. Jones, Coed Cae, Dinas Mawddwy.

Heifers also sold well to average 288p per kg and £1,325 per head to a high of £1,900 for a 500kg Limousin from Bowen & Bowen and 452p per kg for a 420kg Limousin from the same home.

An excellent run of feeding bulls averaged an incredible 343p per kg and £1,515 per head.

Other leading steer prices were: British Blue cross: £1,770 per head; Hereford cross: £1,340 per head; Charolais cross: £1,730 per head; Limousin cross: £1,760 per head; Blonde cross: £1,210 per head; British Blue cross: £1,710 per head.

Leading heifer prices: Limousin cross: £1,900 per head; Hereford cross: £1,540 per head; £1,200 per head; Charolais cross: £1,770 per head; Simmental cross: £1,390 per heads.
