Two people from Swindon’s Homeline team have been honoured for saving a woman inside her burning flat.

Mandy Blackford and Liz Watts sprang into action last year after they received an alert from a resident’s pendant alarm.

The device is on a necklace which, when pressed, alerts Swindon Borough Council’s Homeline service staff when the owner has had a fall or other accident.

The duo soon learned that the vulnerable person had fallen and knocked a candle over, which then set fire to the carpet.

They called 999 but Mandy and Liz arrived at the scene first and found the flat to be filled with smoke.

They bravely went inside the property and got the resident out safely.

Crews of firefighters soon arrived to put out the blaze.

On Thursday night, Mandy and Liz received a Chief Fire Officer’s Commendation at Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service’s annual awards for their lifesaving efforts.
