THE new Savers shop in Ludlow has applied for planning permission for signs which it says will be an “important improvement”.

Savers will be moving into 10 Castle Street, the former premises of M and Co.

Renovation on the shopfront has already begun, with white paint and new decals declaring that the shop will open soon.

The planning, design, access, and heritage statement for the sign says: “This planning, design, access, and heritage statement has been prepared at the request of our client. The proposal only refers to the unit at ground-floor level.

“The new installation will consider materials in keeping with the existing building.

“The proposal is to replace the existing non-illuminated main timber panel.

“The proposal represents modest but nonetheless important improvements to the condition and appearance of the building, which would respect its listed status and make a positive contribution.

“The property extends the length of the site to the rear in the form of a modern extension. At the end of the extension is another two-storey pitched roof extension.

“The planning portal indicates 10 Castle Street has undergone numerous extensions, alterations, and change.

“In 2001, installation of refrigeration plant was granted. In 2005, approval was given for the shop front and signage. In 2021, works to 12 Castle Street were approved but did not impact the elevation to number 10. Most recently, in 2023, approval was granted for redecoration works to levels of the existing elevation to Castle Street as part of works.

“Timber buildings are predominantly off-white, but there are darker painted frames, which do not detract from the area’s character and appearance.”

Locals also took to social media to express their feelings about the shop, with many pleased they would no longer have to travel to Leominster or Hereford to visit Savers.

Sue Farmer said: “That will help bring trade in. Let’s hope the Costa shop gets refurbished and gets a usage.”

Sheena Wieckowicz added: “Not so keen on this, but better than nothing.”

Savers has over 500 shops in the UK offering a range of health, home and beauty products.
