A NUMBER of Ludlow outlets have won accolades in the 2023 Slow Food England Awards.

Farmers fruit and vegetable market in Mill Street was named the best greengrocer, whilst Broad Bean in Broad Street won the best deli or grocer award.

Created ten years ago, the Slow Food Awards are presented to winners who are nominated by the public. Each winner is a champion of good, clean and fair food and represents the very best of their craft.

In addition to the public vote, each national director chooses their Person of the Year, someone who is seen to embodies Slow Food’s values of linking the pleasure of food with a commitment to local communities and the environment.

Shropshire local Steve Guy, founder of Hungry Guy, was chosen as the Person of the Year for 2023.

Mr Guy was praised by judges for cooking restaurant quality food for 70 people for free throughout June as part of the Time for Lunch community scheme.

The judges said that he is constantly looking to incorporate surplus food into his menus, thus tackling food waste and the climate crisis. Passionate about education, and the pleasure of food, the Slow Food team claimed could be no other winner for 2023.

A spokesperson for the Broad Bean said: “Huge thanks to all who took the time to vote for us.

“These awards and their ethos are particularly special to us here at Broad Bean.

“Congratulations to our fellow winners, so great to see so many from Shropshire.”
