POLICE were called after reports that a runaway horse and foal were loose on a road near Tenbury.

West Mercia Police were called at 10.30am to reports of a horse and foal on the loose, which made their way onto the A4112. They did not specify where the horse escaped from.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "A horse and foal were reported as being loose on the A4112 around 10.30am on Friday, October 27. Officers at the scene managed to secure the horses in a nearby field."

Advising on what people should do if they spot a loose horse, RSPCA guidance says: "Contact your local authority or the police for advice. If a horse has a freeze mark, you can contact Premier Equimark for advice.

"Horses found straying on a public road are the responsibility of the police. Please call 101 to report the location or 999 if you feel that there's a danger to road users."

The RSPCA also references Redwings Horse Sanctuary advice which says: "Many stray animals are found wandering on roads. Any animal found on a roadway should be reported to the police. If you feel there is an immediate danger to road users call 999. Local authorities also detain horses under the Animals Act.

"If you find an abandoned horse on your land, remember that it will be frightened. As well as the police you can also report the situation to the RSPCA as their local inspectors may have relevant information. You can offer the horse some fresh water and, if possible, contain it in a place where it can graze safely. If you do move them to safety, put up a notice on the land or near the area you have removed them from.

"If you have further questions call our welfare helpline on 01508 481008 or email welfare@redwings.co.uk. Please remember we are not legal experts so if in doubt, seek advice."
